In 1883, Christiaan Walvoord built a farmhouse near Oostburg, Wisconsin out of “Cream City” brick. It occupies a site once held by Gert Hendrick TeKolste who settled in the area in 1846. Some accounts name TeKolste as the first settler in the Township of Holland. Gert sold a portion of his 600-acre holding to Chris’ father J.D. Walvoord.
The brick is set three-thick for the lower floor while the upper floor has a two-brick thickness. Family members recall that approximately 55,000 bricks were used to build the home. The home is located on Smies Road, west of Sauk Trail and just a short distance from the Oostburg Cemetery. Landmark status was granted on the home 1995 when the house was 102-years old. At the time it was one of the few farmhouses in Wisconsin occupied by the same family (five generations) for over a 100-years.
Johanna Gesiena Walvoort was born 9 Nov 1813 (instead 1814) in Miste Winterswijk, Gelderland.
Her mother Catharina Fredrika Konings was born 26 Sep 1780 in Lichtenvoorde, Gelderland.
She died 25 Aug 1822 in Winterswijk.
Johanna Wilhelmina Renskers, married to William Christiaan Walvoord died on September 30 in Grand Rapids Michigan. Information I got from John O. Renskers (1921-2015, from Crystal Lake, Ilinois.)
John Bernard Walvoord was my grandfather. Derwin Walvoord was his youngest son who when at Hope College in Holland, MI met and married my mom, Jean Eva Vos. They lived in Muskegon, MI and had three children, Douglas, Charles, and Barbara. My brother Charlie and I with our spouses did a road trip last summer and visited the old farmhouse and the cemetery in Oostburg and the also the cemetery in Cedar Grove. We took numerous photos of the headstones.
Barbara, may I ask where you live? My father, John Ten Pas is descended from Delia Walvoord, who was his Maternal grandmother, and we lived in Grand Haven, MI for 25 years.
Actually as I reread your comment, I realize that your brother, Doug Walvoord, and my dad were good friends (Doctors both), I bet. Met at Hope College I believe. He said that he and Doug were somehow related as cousins. Any chance you are from GH?
My great grandparents were John Bernard Walvoord and Jennie Nyhof. They had five children, one of them being Matthew William Walvoord who married Cornelia Marie Smies. These grandparents and my parents are buried in Oostburg cemetery, located a quarter mile East of the Christiaan Walvoord farmhouse on the corner of Walvoord Road and Smies Road. Their grave markers are located at the very back of the cemetery about center of the East/West boundries. JB and Jennie Walvoord lived in the farmhouse for many years and had 80 acre dairy farm and also an apple orchard. Upon their deaths the farmhouse was sold at auction (house only on about an acre) to George and Carol Van Sluys, who lived there for about 30 years. Carol Van Sluys (Carol Ann Walvoord) is my oldest sister. I recall visiting my grandparents JB and Jennie in the house when I was a young child in the 50’s, and spent many visits to the house when occupied by George and Carol Van Sluys. I am one of nine children, all living except for a brother Henry, (the second oldest)who died of leukemia at age five. He is also buried in Oostburg cemetery.
My wife (Mary) and I are both 66 years old, living in San Antonio, TX, and have four children, a couple who you have had contact with (Michael John Walvoord & Kathryn Ann Lewis). I can send the geneology of our branch of the family from Christiaan Walvoord to present. Get in touch with me via e-mail. Great post! Keep up the good work!
Thank you Andrew for the kind comments and great info that helps keep this site fresh!

Thank you so much for all of the information that you have about the Christiaan Walvoord family on your website. It has been a great help to me. I am the current owner of the C.W. homestead (house) and the second generation of my family to own this property. It’s a great privilege to be a caretaker of such a remarkable historical home.
Teavia- My grandparents are George and Carol Van Sluys. My mother Linda and her 4 sisters grew up in the homestead and I have many a fond memory of spending time there with my grandparents. I’m sure you are taking great care of it. I would truly love an opportunity to see it again someday. Best wishes to you. Harmonie
