Julia A. Walvoord Van Wyk, a devoted leader in the Reformed Church inAmerica, died on Sunday, April 15, 2007, at Twining Village HealthCare Center. She was 94.
Born in Byron Center, Michigan, Julia grew up in Williamson, NY, andwent on to attain a Bachelor of Science degree from Hope College in1934 and a Master of Religious Education degree from New YorkTheological Seminary in 1937. She held teaching certificates in bothMichigan and New York.
In partnership with her late husband Reverend Herbert S. Van Wyk,Julia ministered to congregations and communities in Iowa, New York,New Jersey, Michigan, and finally Holland, PA, where she lived herlast 41 years. She also did missionary work in Japan.
On a national level, Julia was the President of the Reformed ChurchWomen from 1974 to 1977 and delegate to the Fifth Assembly of theWorld Council of Churches held in Nairobi, Kenya in 1975. She servedon the Board of Education of the Reformed Church in America for 14years and on the Board of Managers of the National Department ofWomen’s Work of the Reformed Church in America from 1965 to 1973. Shealso served as Denomination Representative to the North AmericanAlliance of Reformed Churches from 1970 to 1976. Her co-authored studyof Romans 1-8, God’s Incredible Gift, was published in 1979.
Julia had many gifts and hobbies but her defining gift was the gift oflove and caring that she imparted to her family and friends.
Julia was the daughter of the late Reverend William C. and JennieRenskers Walvoord, the mother of the late Bruce M. Van Wyk, the sisterof the late Christian H. Walvoord (her twin brother) and the lateJonathan D. Walvoord, and the beloved wife of the late Reverend Dr.Herbert S. Van Wyk, to whom she was married to for 70 years. Julia issurvived by her dear children and their spouses Paul H. Van Wyk andhis wife Pamela of Greencastle, IN, Carl W. Van Wyk and his wife Carolof Tall Timbers, MD, her daughter-in-law Mikki Van Wyk of Potomac, MD.She is also survived by one brother, Raymond A. Walvoord ofWilliamson, NY. Her 7 dear grandchildren include Laura Van Wyk, MarkVan Wyk, Christin Van Wyk Greiman, Carrie Van Wyk, Kathryn Wilford,Matthew Jager and Heather White. She has one great-grandchild, CatelinGreiman. Relatives and friends are invited to attend her memorialservice Thursday, April 19, 2007 at 11:00 AM at Addisville ReformedChurch, 945 Second Street Pike, Richboro, PA 18954, where the familywill receive condolences from 10:00 to 11:00 AM. Interment will beprivate.
