In 1883, Christiaan Walvoord built a farmhouse near Oostburg, Wisconsin out of “Cream City” brick.  It occupies a site once held by Gert Hendrick TeKolste who settled in the area in 1846.  Some accounts name TeKolste as the first settler in the Township of Holland.  Gert sold a portion of his 600-acre holding to Chris’ father J.D. Walvoord.

The brick is set three-thick for the lower floor while the upper floor has a two-brick thickness.  Family members recall that approximately 55,000 bricks were used to build the home.  The home is located on Smies Road, west of Sauk Trail and just a short distance from the Oostburg Cemetery.  Landmark status was granted on the home 1995 when the house was 102-years old.  At the time it was one of the few farmhouses in Wisconsin occupied by the same family (five generations) for over a 100-years.

  1. Thank you so much for all of the information that you have about the Christiaan Walvoord family on your website. It has been a great help to me. I am the current owner of the C.W. homestead (house) and the second generation of my family to own this property. It’s a great privilege to be a caretaker of such a remarkable historical home.
